    John 3:8 (AMP)
The wind blows (breathes) where it wills; and though you hear its sound, yet you neither know where it comes from nor where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.
This is one of the most comforting verses of scripture and also the most frightening. Frightening for those who are afraid to lose control but comforting for those who choose to lose control.

Let me explain where the difference lies. Jesus used this explanation to describe to Nicodemus the dynamics of being born again. Jesus, who came from the Spirit and walked according to the Spirit, described something that, to the carnal earthbound mind, is beyond our capacity to understand. No man, prior to Jesus, had ever experienced a life completely free from the earth bound mentality. Imagine trying to explain the dynamics of flight to a people whose only concept of flight was limited to the birds of the air. Man simply has no concept of the air whistling past their heads at speeds beyond their own experience. Man cannot know the freedom of being able to turn on a whim and having no limits as to where they can go but their own imaginations. We see a raging river that is too wide to cross and no bridge to cross it with and a water that is raging too out of control to try to cross with a boat, yet to a bird, this raging river poses no such obstacle. Neither does the landscape of the terrain pose any obstacle but to land-bound man. The freedom found in the Spirit also has limitless potentials that are beyond a man's imagination. All men can see is the evidence of the wind but cannot tell where it came from or where it is going. But those who are born of the Spirit, have access to the origination of that wind and the purpose of the wind has been revealed to them. Those who are not of the spirit have no such inclination.

Let me try a different way to explain the freedom found by those born of the spirit. I have had many dreams of flying since I was born again. In one of these dreams, I brought my family to a certain location and proceeded to demonstrate how they too could fly. I lifted off the ground without effort and moved my body to a reclining position with my face towards heaven. I then closed my eyes and the Spirit of God carried me wherever He chose. I could feel the wind as I passed through the air but chose not to open my eyes to see where I was going, resting comfortably as He directed my comings and goings. There never was any fear for I knew I was secure in the Hands of my God. This dream experience went a long way to describe my walk with Him according to the Spirit. It did not matter where He would lead me or what He would have me say or do for I was able to rest in everything He required of me and not fear, for my life was safe within the purpose of His will.

Difficulties did arise but mostly from those who did not know such freedom. There were many who stood in the way of what God wanted but I was given to understand the reasons they opposed what God was doing. These were those who were NOT being led by His Spirit but were being led by their fears. When man is led by his fears, he seeks to control all that is around him. This effort to control comes from a desire for safety and security. The very safety and security they seek is within their grasp if they are willing to let go of their fears. Those who have been born again and have let go of the controls of their life in favor of releasing those controls to the Spirit of the Lord, know the difference. There are still many in the body who still are afraid to let go of the things they fear, to let go control of their lives because they fear things will quickly fall out of control. They fear the expected chaos of letting go. They fear what they do not yet know. They fear what they cannot control themselves. They fear what they cannot see.

Here is another dream God had given me to help me release my own fear. In this dream, I was hanging at the last knot of a rope over a deep chasm. Below me, at the mouth of this great chasm, flew a ferocious dragon who said he would devour me the moment I let go. I was terrified. I held on with all my strength. There was no escape. No amount of movement would position me to a place of safety. Just then, in the midst of my terror, God spoke to me. He asked, "Do you trust me?" I said, "Yes, Lord, I do trust You." He then said, "Let go!" I objected and repeated the words of that dragon. God said, "Didn't I promise to never leave you nor forsake you?" I responded, "Yes Lord." He followed, "Then trust Me and let go." I thought about this for a moment. I reasoned that I could not possibly hold on as my strength would soon disappear. So I decided to trust Him, closed my eyes and let go of the rope. Expecting the sensation of falling, I did not move an inch! When I opened my eyes, I was standing on His gigantic hand. It was there all the time but fear prevented me from seeing it.

And so it is when we let go of our fear, for fear prevents our eyes from being able to see what God has already had in place to give us that safety and security. It is the invisible attributes of God that He calls all men to trust in. We cannot possibly see nor can we comprehend what He has in store for those who put their trust in Him.

Pastors and leaders who have not cast their own fears upon the Lord and released themselves to the wind of God's Spirit, seek to control their surroundings just as mortal men do. This message is for you, the shepherds of God's flocks. You have been called and specially prepared to care for His children. Do not be afraid of the Spirit. Nor be afraid of how or where He chooses to blow His wind. He is not out of control and fashions everything according to His wishes.
Where you relinquish control, He gains control.
Just as when you see an artist paint a portrait or a landscape upon his canvas, he does not start at one point and work his way in a logical pattern but his brush paints a little here and a little there, at the whim of the artist's desire. So does the artistry of the Spirit of God move upon the hearts of His people, a little here and a little there. The creativity of God is boundless and only afterwards are we privileged to see the mastery of His works. No man during Jesus' life on earth knew God's plan except for Him who gave Himself for us. Numerous times did Jesus speak of His suffering and death and for all that He spoke, His disciples did not take note of it until after they received the gift of that Holy Wind, the Breathe of the Almighty, filling them with the majesty of His Spirit.

It is time for the leaders, the shepherds of God's flocks, to relinquish control, to let go of their fears and allow themselves and their flocks to be carried away by the Holy Wind of God. For maturity cannot come to the body of Christ unless they are led by His Spirit. For it can only come as we give ear to His words and yield our hearts to the whim of His desires. Hear and obey....Hear and obey....Hear and obey....should be the mantra of this priesthood of all believers. In this, men will know we are His disciples for we will be walking in the freedom of love beyond the reach of that which holds control over mortal man, FEAR....for perfect love casts out all fear!
