How Can We Love Like Jesus Loves?

How Can We Love Like Jesus Loves?

It was in 1976, just a few months after I came to Christ, while working as a night auditor in one of the busiest hotels in Houston, TX, a male guest came to check into the hotel but was extremely obnoxious, full of unreasonable demands and, did I say, obnoxious? I had been reading my bible everyday and after this episode with this guest, I remembered that verse I recently read where it says, "While we were yet sinners, God showed His love for us..." And right after that verse came another...Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do..." and another partial verse came to mind, "for the love of Christ constrains us..." All of these verses came to mind and their effect on me was to show me that MY love was not enough. I needed a God kind of love.

Everyday, I was reminded, while at work, just how far short my own love came in comparison to the Love God continues to show us. Day after day, I simply could not shake it. What came as a nagging thought, soon became an obsession. I KNEW I needed a greater love than the one I possessed. I began to see my own love as a filthy rag. I wanted desperately to cast if off if I could and take on another but how? I cried out everyday to the Lord to give to me His love. As one week turned into another, my cry for Him to give me His love, became so desperate that If I did not receive it, I knew I could not go on.

My prayer evolved into a form such as this, "I don't want my love anymore. If I could cast it away from me as a filthy rag, I would. Your Love is so perfect that if You touched me with just the tip of your little finger, it would be all I would need." This became my consistent cry and one day, facing a weekend off from work, I stretched out on my easy chair, using my bed as an ottoman, and fell asleep with this prayer on my lips. Immediately, in a dream, I saw myself in a prone position before the throne of God. Jesus was on that throne and that same prayer was on my lips before Him.

Suddenly, I just knew He was going to touch me. By now, I was no longer asleep but aware of my surroundings. But even then, I was still in this vision. Just as suddenly as I knew He was going to touch me, HE DID! The best way I can describe what followed is this, "Love like a white liquid light began to pour through every fiber of my being. At first it was like a mighty flow but then it came in pulses, with each pulse pushing its way through me, cleansing me, refreshing me, exhausting me, all at the same time. I felt that if it continued, I would be no more and cried out, "ENOUGH!". Just as suddenly, it stopped and I fell back down in my bed, physically exhausted and fell back to sleep saying, "Thank You, thank You, thank You, thank You and on and on!"

The next morning, when I awoke, I felt like I was floating in a cloud. I couldn't stay in that small room and went for a walk in downtown Houston as I was renting a room at the downtown YMCA. Business men and women were busy walking along the street, heading to their destinations and when I saw anyone, it seemed that I KNEW them their entire lives. What I saw caused me to want to love them and hug them. Complete strangers were known by me. I didn't understand how but I knew them. Then, I saw a kind of silhouette or form surrounding me and it seemed to me I was walking INSIDE Jesus. I was seeing through His eyes, hearing through His ears, understanding through His understanding and loving through His heart! I wanted to hug the entire city. This went on like this for several days.

Never in my life have I ever known such love!

Today, 40 years later, that same love still permeates my being. It has not always been easy as anything we receive from God is going to be tested, and at times, severely. This has happened and usually I was able to forgive, if for no other reason than to OBEY His command to forgive. On only one occasion, I did not have the strength to forgive, even in obedience. He saw this, that I did not have the necessary strength and I felt His arms come around me from behind. I cried broken-heartedly. I said, "It hurts!" and immediately His reply to me was, "I know it hurts son!" This unleashed a greater brokenness in me that I have never known. So deeply I cried and just at what seemed to me the reaching of the depths of my being, He opened my eyes and showed me HIS VIEW of those who have betrayed me, my fellow leaders in this church in which I served. It was His View, His perspective that changed EVERYTHING! After seeing this, I found it easy to forgive them AND to LOVE them, without reserve!

This experience became one of the most valuable of my life and He reminded me that ONLY by seeing others through HIS EYES, can we be able to forgive and to love them with a perfect love. This is what He showed me in '76 and now, about 12 years later, He gave me this taste again and reminder of how I am to continue my walk in Him.
    Colossians 3:3 (NKJV)
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
That first view of myself being INSIDE that form of Christ so long ago, finds its verification in this verse. He wants us to learn how to walk IN Christ, with His form enveloping us so that what we see, hear and understand never comes from our own senses or understanding but entirely from His perspective. This can only occur supernaturally. For this to occur in our lives, I have found that we must pursue HIS LOVE above our own. We must see our own love as a filthy rag for THAT is what it is! A filthy rag! Our love is one of the last vestiges, last strongholds of the flesh in our lives. As long as we continue to walk in our own love, we are not walking IN His.

It is not a matter of TRYING to walk in His love. We CANNOT do this because we will it. It MUST be received as HE ALONE can give this to us. Just like that beam Jesus talks about in Matthew 7, once we remove the beam in our own eye, then we can see clearly to remove the sliver from our brother's eye. However, Once you make the attempts to remove that beam from your own eye, you soon discover that you do not have the power to remove the works of the flesh from your own heart. All we can do, in our own strength, is to make the choice for change but the change can ONLY come by His power! For only Christ has that power to change our hearts and replace our stony hearts with a heart of flesh on which He writes His law on our hearts.

Then, once the fleshly desire of our own heart has been changed through His power, grace, we can see clearly and NOW we KNOW, we cannot remove the sliver from our brother's eye but only Christ can. We now know the secret to transformation. We can only confess our need for Him and it is by His power, by His grace, we are then transformed, changed into that image of Him he has revealed to us. THIS is the truth that is needed in seeking to cast off our love as a filthy rag and receive from HIM that promise of His incorruptible and perfect love. We need another touch and we need to look up to Him for He alone is our redemption and He alone can cause us to see all things CLEARLY. (Mark 8:22-26-AMP)

god-shaped-holeHe promises us that if we seek Him with our whole heart, He will be found. How desperately do we see our need for Him and how desperately do we want to rid ourselves of this thing that so keeps us away from being ABLE to fulfill His commands to love others as Jesus loved us? His commands are impossible to fulfill in our own strength but He is willing to give us of His strength. He desires an exchange. Our unrighteousness for His righteousness. Will we respond lightly? When the crowds tell us to keep quiet when we cry out to our Savior, will we listen to them or will we, like Bartimaeus, cry out all the more. Will we let our 12 year affliction of the loss of blood and strength keep us from touching the hem of His garment or will we use the last of our strength to reach out and touch God for what we so desperately need. How great is our desire? How hard will we be willing to press in through this crowd of our own past failures? How badly do we need Him and His love to replace our own that is ready to die?

If you will not be denied, then you shall have whatever it is you need that is HIS to give you, but you MUST press in.
    Matthew 11:12 (AMP)
And from the days of John the Baptist until the present time, the kingdom of heaven has endured violent assault, and violent men seize it by force [as a precious prize—a share in the heavenly kingdom is sought with most ardent zeal and intense exertion].

    1. The real test to see if we are walking in God's supernatural love is to see 1 Corinthians 13 as a check list. If we are walking in each and every example shown, then we are not walking in the strength of OUR OWN love but HIS. If we are TRYING to love others but fail, this is evidence that we are walking in our own love and not His for HIS love NEVER FAILS!

      ☐ 1-Love suffers long
      ☐ 2-Love is kind
      ☐ 3-Love does not envy
☐ 4-Love does not parade itself
☐ 5-Love is not puffed up
☐ 6-Love does not behave rudely
☐ 7-Love does not seek its own
      ☐ 8-Love is not provoked
      ☐ 9-Love thinks no evil
☐ 10-Love does not rejoice in iniquity
☐ 11-Love rejoices in the truth
      ☐ 12-Love bears all things
      ☐ 13-Love believes all things
      ☐ 14-Love hopes all things
      ☐ 15-Love endures all things
      ☐ 16-Love never fails

In every one of these, Jesus did because the Father was always with Him, guiding Him, feeding Him and Jesus always did as He saw what His Father was doing and always spoke only what He heard His Father speaking. THIS is how we are to walk, in obedience to the Holy Spirit who was sent for that very purpose, to reveal the heart of the Father to us and to empower us with His Spirit to accomplish His will and not our own.

So, go ahead and print this list out and check off all those you are walking in and see if there is room for improvement. We all fail in one way or another but let us endeavor to not fail in our love for God and for those Jesus died for.
