    The Our Father Prayer

    The Our Father Prayer

What was Jesus teaching us when He taught His disciples to pray?

Was He teaching what words to say, as so many recite those words today, even repetitively? No, emphatically no! Jesus was showing the attitude of heart we must have as we approach the Father for anything that concerns us while in this life. Historically, many lost their lives because they approached God in a way that was not pleasing to Him and offended Him. Let us not be as those who lost their lives because of the recklessness of their approach to God, not fearing Him nor honoring Him in both His Glory and His Holiness. Jesus was teaching His disciples how to approach the Father with the right attitude of heart. God, who looks upon the motives of our heart, is not moved by the “mouthing of words” or our many “repetitions” but is moved by that which speaks more loudly than the sound of our words, the content of our heart.
Matthew 6:8-13“Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. In this manner, therefore, pray:
    OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN

(He is the Father of all and His residence is not on earth but heaven. We must remember as we interact with others that the same Heavenly Father of you is also that other person’s Heavenly Father. Also, we MUST remember that He is in HEAVEN and not of the earth with our lowly and selfish thoughts and desires. His is a heavenly realm, far above the realm in which we live and so His perspective is far different than ours. He is not affected by the thoughts and actions of mankind as we are and as such, He is not moved or persuaded as we are. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so are His thoughts above our own.)

    HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME

(Because of our continued existence in an evil world that is filled with all manner of selfishness, we tend to lose sight of how HOLY God is and that what is represented by His name is something so far removed from our concepts and thoughts. As we pray to Him, let us remember that He is far more pure of thought, word and actions than we are. We should never place Him in the same place and thoughts and actions as we are and do. His ways are far higher than ours. So let us humble ourselves and recognize the Holiness of God and approach Him appropriately.)

    YOUR KINGDOM COME
    YOUR WILL BE DONE
ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN

(The very purpose of God’s intervention with mankind is to redeem us from our fallen state which is NOT what He intended. God created us to be WITH Him where He is and to know Him as our loving Father. Since the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden, God has intended to restore all that mankind lost in that Garden. This means the re-establishment of His kingdom and all it contains, within the heart, mind and body of each and every one of us who believe. It is vital we keep this in mind as we approach Him for whatever reason we DO approach Him. When we approach, let us not forget that it was WE who turned away from HIM and not the other way around. It was because we sought to do our own will instead of His that brought us death in this world. So, in our asking of Him and acknowledging of Him, let us set our hearts to walk in complete obedience to His Will and be ready to turn away from ours.)

GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD

(We are always so focused on our daily needs as pertaining to our physical presence in this world. All that we do is to find a way to either survive or succeed in this world and that, according to the standards of whatever society we live in. How easy we forget that God looks upon us, in our struggles, differently than we look at ourselves. When God brought manna in the wilderness for the children of Israel, it was to train them that they could TRUST God for their daily needs. Jesus taught His disciples that if they continued to seek the kingdom of God and the righteousness of God, then they would no longer have to take any thought at all of what they would eat, wear and live. God is our Father and wants us to not only acknowledge this truth but to experience daily in our lives. When we ask for our “daily bread”, it is not just for our natural needs but also our spiritual needs for His mercies are new and fresh every morning.)

    AND FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS
    AS WE FORGIVE OUR DEBTORS

(There two important examples given to us by Jesus. One example given by Jesus was the story of the man who owed a great debt that he could not pay and how he was forgiven that debit but refused to forgive a much smaller debt owed to him. Another example was when Mary Magdalene came to wash Jesus’ feet with her tears and wiped His feet with her hair. Her sins were many but through her actions representing her sorrow for those sins at the feet of a Man who knows only love and mercy, she showed the depth of her love and as a result, all her sins were forgiven her by Jesus. How can we expect good things from God if we continue to hold others responsible for the harm they’ve done to us or even if we have self hate for our own shortcomings? Let us be free from all stains of sin, including the stain of unforgiveness, towards ourselves and towards others. Jesus told us that if we do not forgive others, neither will our heavenly Father forgive us our sins. So let us wear forgiveness as a cloak or garment and be ready at all times to not only forgive those who trespass against us but to love them as Jesus loved us.)

AND DO NOT LEAD US INTO TEMPTATION
BUT DELIVER US FROM THE EVIL ONE

(The onslaught of the evil one is relentless and as such, God has provided for us a way of escape from this flood of filth that is designed by the enemy of our souls to rob us, kill us and destroy us. God never leads into temptation but the evil one does and his only power over us can be found by drawing us away through enticements based on the desire of our flesh. If we walk according to the Spirit, then we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. Let us always be mindful of the battle that lies before us everyday and not walk as fools or foolishly according to the dictates of our own will and selfishness. If we walk as to seek to please our Father in heaven, then we will not be seeking to please ourselves or the will of mankind.)

    FOR YOURS IS THE KINGDOM
AND THE POWER AND THE GLORY FOREVER

(We have been taught in God’s Word that we do not have the power to walk in a way that is pleasing to God UNLESS we walk according to HIS power and HIS Spirit. It is the recognition of this one truth that should lay as a foundation to all our steps. If we walk with this as our foundation, then nothing will trip us up or cause us to stumble. We will not walk in the strength of our own will or abilities but cast all of that behind us and walk forward only at the clear word and direction of the Spirit of God. For it is only those who walk according to the Spirit that are accepted as sons of God.)

    AMEN

(SO BE IT! Let us always walk in agreement with God and His Word as He reveals the truth of that Word to us. In so doing, we will not walk as those who are blind but as those who walk in the Light. Only God has the final word in all things that come into our lives. Let us recognize this truth and be unmovable in holding to those truths.)
