What God revealed when David "killed" Goliath TWICE!

What God Revealed When David "Killed" Goliath TWICE!

So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David. Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. (1 Samuel 17:50-51 NKJV)
In verse 50, David killed Goliath with a stone which "sunk" into the forehead of the giant. In verse 51, David killed the giant by removing his head. In both verses, it says David "killed" the giant. This is no mistake or typo or contradiction. God PURPOSELY showed that this giant who taunted Israel and defied God was killed "twice".

Defeating this "giant" of a man, who openly defied the God of Israel and God's army boasted of his own stature and used his stature to intimidate and bully. Pride was something that was not in short supply as this man was trained as a warrior his whole life and apparently, by the fact he was there to stand before the Philistines as their champion, no man was able to defeat him in all those years. This is what "pride" does to a man. It brings out the violence that is at the heart of pride and also brings out the ultimate in rebellion against God and His chosen ones.

Taking the life of this giant was not enough. He left an indelible imprint of the lives of the soldiers of Israel as none of them dared stand up to man giant. Pride or stubbornness is often described as the "forehead". In Jeremiah, God said He was going to make Jeremiah's "forehead" stronger than his opponents' forehead. The first thing that needed to be addressed then was this force of pride that drove this giant to do what he did.

So, when that stone was driven into the skull of this giant, pride was smitten a death blow and the giant was "killed". The cutting off of the head also has its significance. The head often represents man's "authority". The priests in the temple, including the high priest, as long as they were in service in the temple, kept their heads covered. God is their authority and their heads, their authority, needed to submit (kept under cover) to God's headship. When Israel's first high priest, Aaron, lost his two eldest sons to the foolishness of their bringing their censors of worship at a time of their own choosing and not according to God's clear direction, fire went out from the Lord and consumed them. Immediately, Aaron was instructed by the Lord, through Moses, not to "uncover his head" lest he die. The same was said to Aaron's other two sons who also served as priests in the temple of the wilderness.

When the enemy is defeated in our lives, God showed us that not only must the enemy be defeated but his "authority" must also be removed so that the man or woman of God will not be hindered any longer through fear and intimidation that, before that time, kept them in bondage. It is important to remember this principle when ministering deliverance to God's people. Because the powers of darkness, although defeated, will still call out, from the outside of the delivered person, that they are still there because the "remnants" or effects of fear still remain until they are completely removed by exchanging the authority of darkness with the authority of light. I have witnessed the effect of this truth many many times as I ministered to others.

It is with this principle that addiction can be defeated, once and for all. A dear sister in Christ was saved 3 years but still under the addiction of heroin for 5 years. When I first was introduced to her was back in the mid '80s. An elder brought her to me in the parking lot after church and began to introduce her to me as I was a home group leader at the time and she was in my geographic area. She told me at the time of our introduction that she had been to every big name ministry and TV ministries for deliverance from her drug addiction. Each of these men laid hands on her, prayed and declared her free. She walked away from each still under the control of this drug.

As she was relating all these experiences to me, my thoughts went to the Lord and I asked Him, "Why are you picking on me?" His answer was immediate, "You will not give up on her." He was right. How could I. He never gave up on me. So I accepted her into the group and began seeking the Lord everyday for the answer to why her addiction did not break. He showed me that there were idols in her life and as long as she clung to them, her addiction could not be broken. When I asked what those idols were, He showed me "books", lots of them. So I called this sister in Christ and asked her about her book collection and just as the Spirit of the Lord revealed, she had thousands of them. They were all various forms in the self-help category with most of them employed with demonic influences.

I explained to her about why the drug addiction could not be broken until she renounces and rids herself of each and every book. I showed her the biblical text supporting this action and she was in complete agreement. Then we set up a tentative meeting to involve the rest of the home group as the Lord showed me He wanted their involvement. The Spirit of the Lord showed me what to do with detailed instructions to give to the group. This sister was to be presented with each and every book in her library to renounce and those she felt she didn't have the strength to renounce were brought to me as God was giving me wisdom on the spot to deal with each difficult book. There were hundreds of these books with about 20+ that required my personal attention. We got through every book which was thousands of dollars worth bought over a period of many years. We carried these books away from her home and burned them in a trash barrel in the back of our yard at our home.

A few days later, after a midweek church meeting the night before, I felt the "burden of the Lord" for intercession come upon me more suddenly and stronger than at previous times. I asked Frances (my wife) what she felt we should pray for and she suggested we pray for the home group. This did not relieve this burden so she suggested we pray for this new addition to our group. We prayed by agreeing with God's purpose in her life and thereby "giving Him permission" to act on her behalf. There is a real truth to be explored about the "giving God permission" to work but I will save this one for another message. As soon as we finished praying, the burden completely lifted and a great peace fell on me. I happened to look at my watch and it was 10:50am.

Shortly after praying, I suggested we call her to see what is happening. We called her mother's house but no one was home. Frances saw her leave the church we another sister in the Lord we knew and we called her. This sister with the addiction was there and was called to the phone. She greeted us and wondered why we were calling and I explained about the burden to pray and she quickly asked if that was 10 minutes ago. I looked at my watch and it read 11:00am. Saying yes and wondering why this time frame was important, she said, "I was laying in bed being wracked with pain as I was going through withdrawals. Suddenly, all that pain lifted off of me like a blanket! Getting real excited, I asked her, "Is the only way this pain leaves is if you take more heroin?" She answered affirmatively and I nearly shouted over the phone, "You're FREE. God just delivered you from your addiction!!!" She began to cry and us also. What a wonderful thing to see one of God's precious ones being freed from her captivity!

The next time we saw her, we prayed and broke all the power of the enemy off of her and "cut off the head" of this demon's authority over her life and declared the rightful authority of Jesus Christ over her life from that point on. She never had anymore desire for the drug. In fact, just the very thought of that drug created a revulsion in her inner man. She was truly made free and remained free until the Lord took her home some years later. Today, she is enjoying the presence of the Lord in heaven and will never suffer as she did while on this planet. I would dare say that none of the sad memories of her suffering would ever come to mind but only the love, longsuffering, patience and mercy of God is all she remembers today and forever.

What God did for this dear saint, He promises to do for you. We have lessons available to us and the Holy Spirit is always standing ready to show any who seeks. Jeremiah 33:3 is a favorite of mine that states, "Call unto Me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things you don't know!" We have only to ask and He will give us all we need to accomplish even what others may consider the impossible. I pray this will resonate in your own spirit man and the Spirit of the Lord confirms this truth to you.
