I Love the Way You Love!

I Love the Way You Love!

Back when I was just a babe in Christ, I attended a city outreach in Houston Texas called Church in the City. We met in a neighborhood house near downtown. Just a few families. One day, a couple that had been living in an abandoned house nearby came for a visit. They both smelled to high heaven. As soon as they entered the house, the whole church moved as one man as far away from them in this small house as they could with the notable exception of one.

That one was me. I could smell them too. They obvious have not bathed in weeks and the woman wore as a dress a cut out of an old inner tube from a truck tire. In the stifling heat of summertime in humid Houston Texas, this did not bode well to draw people to them. When I saw these two walk in, my heart sunk within me and God's love permeated all my thoughts toward them. I simply could not help myself but to walk over and greet them with a firm hug. It never occurred to me what the others of this little church thought about this. But my own attitude of heart was one that refused to see their current condition but see them as God saw me not so long before. He loved me without condition, how could I not do the same for these.

Many weeks later, my pastor of this little church visited me and said something to me that greatly encouraged me to never stop loving any that God would bring to our midst. He said, "I love the way you love people." He was making reference to this smelly couple. Although others were repelled, he took notice and wanted to encourage me to never stop loving, regardless of the circumstances.

I am sharing this experience to encourage you, the reader. Many times God will bring the least into our lives. What will we do when they come. Will we recoil away from them because they smell bad? Will we reject them in favor of the friends of our own choosing? Or will we choose not to see with our natural eyes and choose to see them as God sees them, as His children ready for redemption? Remember, in God's eyes, none of us "smelled" so good with our filthy rags as our clothing.

It was the redemption we received through Christ that our rags were exchanged for His garments of pure white. He has called us to walk as He walked...loving the unlovely, forgiving the unforgivable, and even dying for the ungrateful. What a tremendous gift He has bestowed upon us. Let us walk as those who have not forgotten where He found us and walk with grateful hearts. In this way, we too can be perfect as God is perfect.
