    Rocking the Boat

    Rocking the Boat

Never be afraid to be the one who rocks the boat, especially if you know that boat is headed for the giant falls. Others may not realize their lives are in peril but you see it, it is you that MUST rock that boat.

Years ago, I went to a particular bible study group meeting at a local university. It was my first time and didn't know what to expect. I was less than six months into my Christian walk. The only ones in this meeting I recognized was one of the leaders from our church.

A short time after I arrived, a young lady walked into the room. As soon as I saw her, I heard the Spirit of God instructed me to tell her of the truth He just opened to me that morning. So I did. While talking to her, the Spirit cautioned me to stop talking. One of the leaders of this meeting approached us and wanted to know what we were talking about. I didn't know how to answer him when, just at that moment, another leader pulled him away. As soon as he left, the Spirit said to finish telling her. Just as I finished, both leaders pulled me aside and demanded I tell them what I was talking to her about. I told them I was explaining the meaning of 1 John 3:91. Both berated me by saying that I didn't know what I was doing and was causing harm to her. Before they could continue, someone informed them the meeting was beginning. Needless to say, I had no idea what they were talking about and could not understand their anger toward me.

The meeting started with songs of praise and worship. After about one or two songs, the young lady I was talking to started to cry uncontrollably. Everyone gathered around her to pray for her as they all seemed to believe she needed comfort. I was sitting opposite her and did not feel sorrow but was overwhelmed with great joy. I didn't know why but as I looked in the direction of those two leaders, their angry gaze was fixed on me. All I could think of was to pray that God open their eyes and forgive them. Once this young lady was able to compose herself, she told this story.
She was wanting to go to church but didn't know where she could go. No one was at the church she normally went to so she contacted the wife of one of the leaders at this meeting. She was told of this meeting and left right away. She said as she was entering this room, pointing at me she said I began talking to her. At that moment, I looked again at the leaders and they both were glaring angrily at me. Then she said that what I told her set her free!
This explained why I felt such joy at her tears. I didn't understand why but I knew that what I did was simply obey God's voice and in so doing, a child of His was released from her bondage.

Now you would think that these two leaders would have rejoiced over this little one being set free but they did not. Instead, they both gave me a severe warning not to do something like this again. My answer was that I was doing what the Holy Spirit was leading me to do. They said that I didn't know the potential harm that could have occurred. I said that the Holy Spirit knows her and was instructing me. How can anything go wrong if He is the one doing this?

This is when they both explained to me that this young lady had been caught up in a pseudo-Christian cult called 'The Children of God'. One of the primary ways they kept their followers 'in line' was a false interpretation of the very verse God had instructed me to explain the truth of to this young lady. She had been held in bondage by a false interpretation and set free by the correct, God-inspired, interpretation.

It is vitally important to obey the direction of the Holy Spirit, even if it means you will rock the boat as a result. God is more interested in freeing His children than being concerned with upsetting those who choose to remain blinded to His handiwork.
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. 13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 5:11-16
