Through the Lens of the Spirit

Through the Lens of the Spirit

I was listening to that wonderful song "We Fall Down" by Bob Carlisle and as I meditated on the disappointment experienced by the merchant passing the monastery who wondered what it must be like to live in such a place where he would be warm, well fed and at peace and shut the world away. When he asked the priest emerging form that place, he asked him what it must be like to live there. The response from the priest is not at all what this poor tired man expected. "We fall down, we get up," was all the priest replied.

This story reminded me of the many souls who open their bibles to read passages of scripture from only the perspective of a casual view of what those words say. They have chosen to read only the surface of the depth of riches that can be found. Instead of taking deep draughts of those healing and restoring words, they seek only to fill their minds with the chapters and verses so as to quote from memory as they have heard many ministers do.

How much has been lost to them as they hurry through life and stopping only briefly to fulfill some perceived obligation. They miss the best part of their lives in this headlong rush to eternity. So much to do. So much to gain. No true consideration as to what their choices will bring them. What weight in glory will their choices bring. Words are spilled out of their mouths with such a torrent of poison that they do not even look back to see how their selfishness has poisoned the lives of those who have been touched by them. Like the chemical waste waters released into our streams, rivers and lakes with no thought of the effect of this carelessness on succeeding generations; so are the ramblings of men with untamed tongues. Generations of others that follow them suffer the poison of their thoughtless words and deeds.

All this because we fail to take advantage of the one gift that was released to us by the Father through His Son, Jesus Christ. Holy Spirit, that Spirit of Truth, that issues forth from the Father, was sent to lead us and guide us into ALL TRUTH. Truth IS that LIGHT that casts all darkness and shadows of darkness away. It is only the TRUTH that can free us from the deception of even our own hearts. Only the ONE that was sent to us has that ability to expose the thoughts and intents of our own hearts and by this, reveal to us His greater purpose, His better way, His heart and will that fits perfectly in His plan for not only our individual lives but brings us into harmony with His overall design being knitted together to form that living and breathing expression of the Body of Christ here on earth.

God is not looking to those who continue on their own ways although professing Christ. He is pouring out of His Spirit on those who have seen the fruitlessness of a life lived through self determination and have chosen to yield themselves completely to the very capable hands of the Potter who fashions them for His purpose. It matters not what the potter forms in them as they have recognized that only by dying will they live. I therefore die to my dreams, visions and aspirations to allow Him, through His Holy Spirit to provide for me all that He deems necessary for my life. I do not live by bread alone but by EVERY word that proceeds from His mouth to me. For what He speaks is LIFE to me.

So today, I no longer will live my life to fulfill what is pleasing to me but choose rather to be still and learn from the heart of the Father what He knows is best for what is now my return on His gift to me, my life.

come untoSo today, instead of rushing headlong into an uncertain future and reading only what is on the surface of God's Word, I seek to peer into His Word only with the assistance of His Holy Spirit. I choose to now read His Holy Word through the lens of the Spirit. In this way, I will not just read words but be shown the very Spirit behind those words. This alone is the power that transforms us mind, body and soul. If His words are not experienced, then they are of no value to us. They are just words. It is only in experiencing His living Word, working in our lives to reveal God's heart and purposes and in so doing, uncovering the thoughts of our hearts that we are able to see the new paths to walk in and learn that through hearts of obedience are we allowed to be ushered into the very presence of the Father.

So join with me. Stop what you are doing and let God reveal to you His heart. You will never be the same. Your life will find new meaning and purpose. You will find godliness along with contentment and in so doing learn where the true value of life is found.

This may seem hard, and at times, it is not easy but He has promised to be our companion throughout the whole way. Never let go of His hand. But even if you do, He promises to never let go of yours.
