    Heart To Heart

I am sure that at some point in each one’s life, a “heart to heart” conversation with a loved one was in order. This “heart to heart” conversation is one where we bear our souls to another, thus making ourselves vulnerable. It is a time of utter honesty and trust, designed to reveal our deepest emotions, fears, hopes and dreams. This kind of conversation is never designed to be destructive or critical in any way but it’s purpose is to encourage the other person to do the same and come into agreement for the benefit of all.

When Jesus was walking this earth, He stated unequivocally that He did not come to do His own will but the will of the Father. He even stated that He did nothing except what He was shown by the Father (Spirit). In other words, Jesus communicated with His Father “heart to heart”. Only in this way could He reveal to men what the Father “looked like” in everyday interactions.

Throughout His ministry, the closest Jesus could come to a heart to heart communication with His disciples was that demonstration of the Father’s heart they saw daily. Just as it is not possible for you or I to be able to “show” the motives of our heart except by the use of words, Jesus too was constricted by this same limitation. A limitation that the Father intended to overcome.

With so much that needed to be communicated to His disciples but severely limited because mankind is not able to speak or hear according to the Spirit as the Spirit had not yet been given, Jesus spoke of another Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, would be sent but only after He ascended. For if Jesus did not ascend to the Father, the Holy Spirit could not be given. Jesus is that “bridge” between the heart of the Father and the heart of mankind that without Him, there can be no salvation nor can mankind be put in touch with the heart of the Father.

Once the Holy Spirit came to fully immerse the faithful in that upper room, then, for the very first time, mankind was given that which only Jesus possessed, a heart to heart access to the Father.

When we are born again, we are not born again of human emotions nor of the human will. We are born again of the Spirit of the Father and from that point on, we begin to walk in a new life, a life that requires nurturing and much attention by the Spirit. Just as a natural baby born into this world cannot survive without the love and nurturing of its parents, so can we, not survive without the love and nurturing of the Spirit of God.

We are called to walk in the Spirit and in so doing, we are then able to put to death the deeds of the flesh. What is fed is what will grow. Feed the flesh and it’s desires and the flesh will grow stronger and stronger. Feed the Spirit and the desires of the Holy Spirit and the spirit man will grow stronger and stronger. Which ever is being fed, the other will be death. For if we walk NOT by the flesh but by the Spirit, we give no place for the flesh to survive.

I have often made reference to my own “heart to heart” communication with the Father. Whenever I am faced with a decision, a choice, no matter how small or great that choice is, I say, "I incline my heart to the Lord". Since He already knows my questions before I ask because He knows the end from the beginning and “all my days were written before there were any”, I can rest in that assurance and simply incline my “willing to be obedient heart” to His heart and receive His answers.

Understand a very simple truth, whenever you read this phrase in the scriptures when speaking concerning God, "voice of the Lord your/our God”, it is speaking of when God reveals His heart to us. This is what we call “revelation”, the very same revelation that Jesus told Peter of how the truth of Jesus was revealed to Peter’s heart. It is this “revelation” or “heart to heart” communication that the gates of hell will not be able to withstand.

In Deut. 5, Moses tells the children of Israel that when they spoke saying they did not want to hear the “voice of the Lord” as they were fearful of dying..., he told them that the Lord said, “I have heard the “voice” of these people and they speak truthfully...” (my paraphrase)

The voice of these people God was referring to was the voice of their heart and not just their lips. Men may speak from their lips without committing their hearts as in “they draw near to me with the lips but their hearts are far from me...”.  When you see the English word used to describe God speaking His heart, it is translated as “the voice of the Lord our God”.

God always speaks to man from His heart and seeks to open our heart to hear His voice but this can only happen if we choose to agree with Him. Otherwise, just like the children of Israel who all heard the voice of the Lord at that mountain, giving to them His commandments but this encounter did not change their hearts because they did not seek for or long for the knowledge of the truth. So, not being mixed with faith, all the words given by the “voice of the Lord” did them no good as they all perished in the wilderness because of their unbelief, all except for a notable few.

I would like to encourage you to go back and search for those phrases “voice of the Lord” with the understanding that He is speaking about a “face to face”, “heart to heart” encounter. A good and loving father desires that we, His children, understand His heart so that we may come into that place of rest where we learn we can fully trust in Him.

So, if you’ve “heard” this message, my prayer for you is that you too will begin to “incline your heart” to the heart of the Father so that you may learn of His desires for you and learn that He has only the best planned for you, no matter the circumstances.
